We learn a lot from our family tree (also called a genealogy) especially from drawing it, where we gain insight, can identify generational patterns and see the impact and influences passed down the generations. Your family tree is an important part of your own unique story and can strengthen a stronger sense of identity.
“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots”. - Marcus Garvey, Jamaican Journalist
Why is it important for us to know our family tree? Here are some reasons to consider:
1. An understanding of your generational history helps to understand yourself better, to make sense of generational patterns that are passed from one generation to another. To give understanding and insight into not just your own individual story, but also the bigger story of your family history.
2. Looking at your family of generations can help make sense of why you may experience physical, emotional or mental pain and suffering, or why you may find yourself repeating the same behaviours in relationships that perpetuate your pain and suffering.
3. In order to understand our own lives, we need to understand the foundations. God’s story is told through the Word of God, the Bible. Just like our own stories, there are many pieces that are to be connected, made sense of, to fit together, like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle put together, to see the whole picture. The Bible is made up of many pieces. 66 books, written by 40 plus authors, over thousands of years, inspired, and God breathed.
The Bible, the Word of God is literally what that means. God’s Word spoken to you and for you. God’s Word is His story, from beginning to end, His whole story, the whole truth.
