Comfort in Times of Uncertainty in Our World

Updated: 5 days ago

It can be difficult not to feel anxious or fearful when we look at the events unfolding around the world today. News of conflict, disasters, wars and uncertainty can easily overwhelm our hearts and minds. Yet when we step back and look at history through the lens of Scripture, we are reminded that these kinds of seasons are not new.

In Ecclesiastes 1:9 we read: “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” Humanity has faced turmoil, war, and uncertainty throughout every era. While the times may change, the struggles of the world often look familiar.

But there is another pattern repeated throughout the Bible and throughout our lives—God’s faithfulness.

Again and again, Scripture shows us that God does not abandon His people. Even in the most challenging circumstances, He continues to work all things for good. We can find comfort in remembering that the One who holds the world also holds your world.

One of the passages that brings me the greatest peace is Psalm 46. This beautiful Psalm is a song about Zion, God’s holy city, where His people dwell with Him. The city is holy because God Himself dwells there. More than that, the Psalm reminds us that God is our true home and our true security.

Throughout its eleven verses, the Psalm describes God’s character in powerful ways. He is our refuge—a place of safety and protection when we feel threatened. He is our fortress, a stronghold in times of trouble. He is a present help, always near to those who are weak and in need. He is our rescuer, our warrior, and our protector.

  • Our refuge – a safe place when life feels overwhelming

  • Our fortress – protection against what threatens us

  • An ever-present help in trouble – not distant, but near

  • The Lord of Hosts – the sovereign ruler over all powers

The Psalmist appears to be writing during a time of turmoil. Phrases such as trouble, nations raging, kingdoms falling, war, bows, spears, and chariots paint a vivid picture of conflict and uncertainty. Yet in the midst of all this chaos, the Psalmist proclaims a profound truth: God is with His people.

One of the most well-known verses from this Psalm is Psalm 46:10:“Be still and know that I am God.”

These words remind us to pause in the midst of fear and remember who truly holds power over the world. God is sovereign over every nation, every conflict, and every moment of history. At His voice, the earth melts. Nothing is beyond His authority.

The Psalm also points forward to a future time when wars will cease and peace will reign. God will ultimately bring an end to conflict and establish His perfect rule.

Perhaps the greatest takeaway from Psalm 46 is this: the people of God are secure no matter what environment they may be living in. Whether facing turmoil, war, destruction, or natural disasters such as floods, fires, or storms, our ultimate security does not depend on circumstances.

For believers, our security rests in what God has done through His Son, Jesus Christ. Through Him, God has secured the souls of those who trust in Him. While the world may shake, our hope remains unshaken.

So, when uncertainty rises around us, we can remember this simple but powerful truth: God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Three things to remember in Psalm 46

1.      God protects His people (vv.1–3)

2.      God dwells with His people (vv.4–7)

3.      God will ultimately end conflict (vv.8–11)

Don’t fear → God is present → God will have the final victory.

When the world feels uncertain, Psalm 46 reminds us: The One who governs the universe also cares personally for each one of us.

And the One who holds the world truly does hold our world.
